IT NEVER FAILS

Well a big HOWDY from Texas! LOL Hope ya’ll are doing good this morning! I am doing well… my plants are good, my kids are good, and my house is getting a little back to normal. Ok, Jean… whatcha talking about that the “Spunky Renee is on vacation?? I happen to be right here thank you very much! LOL!

Ok so remember how I said it was gonna be a lazy day yesterday? Well… it wasn’t. It never fails that I can’t sit still long enough to “relax” if you will. I always have to be doing something and yesterday was no different. I started by looking up lemon stuff on the computer but not finding much for that. SOOO I got annoyed, got up and dressed and went window shopping. I picked up some cat food at Petsmart then I went to Hobby Lobby. They didn’t have lemon anything except 1 overpriced, fake plastic lemon!

I did however get an idea for the centerpieces one of my customers wants me to make. She was telling me how the party is going to be black and either gold or silver… she couldn’t make up her mind. So it was a little frustrating for me with no determined color scheme. Well when I was walking around the store I saw these centerpieces of flowers in colored terra cotta pots. Hmmm… ok lets think classic… weddings, anniversaries, etc. What do they all have in common? Black & White! So I painted a small Terra Cotta gold, used white silk roses with black and gold tiny buds and added some silver star garland rolled in spirals. I might add some ribbon but I’m not quite sure yet. What do you think? Is it pretty and classy or funky and tacky?

Ok, so remember I told you I want to do my kitchen in the Lemon theme? Well I am trying anyway. After Hobby Lobby, I wandered to the next store into the hardware, paints, etc. I was looking at the paint sample cards. I found one called “Lemon Peel” and I fell in love! That is the paint color for my kitchen! I got a quart mixed up for me and then paid and left. Let me tell ya, its pretty bright! LOL… This picture just shows the first step… I will post new pictures each time its updated until its done.

Then I got some gas for the car and went and picked up the kiddos. I put together the centerpiece and was going to clean some more when I get real faint and had to sit down. My head hurt, I was ill to my stomach, and it was just like someone hit me with a bag of bricks. OOOPPS. Uh silly me forgot to take my meds that morning or eat all day… uh oh… so I tested my sugars, which were a naughty really low. Ok, stop what I’m doing and get to munching… starting with a candy bar! Good thing I have secret stash LOL… but honestly it was like eating mud… not very appetizing!

So, what’s on tap for today you might ask. Well, I figured after the kids get done in the doctor’s office, I might stop buy Pier 1 or Ikea or whatever it is down the road and see if maybe THEY have lemon stuff. The kids only have a half day today, so I’m not even gonna rush and try to get them back before school lets out. Maybe I should take them to the beach or something… its supposed to be a beautiful day and it shouldn’t be too crowded being a weekday. Hmmm… it’s a thought. After we’re done in Galveston with whatever we plan to do, I figured I would come back and paint more in the kitchen and maybe do some planting. Tomorrow starts April Autism Awareness, so I also have to clear out the table so I can do some mass sewing! My daughter is letting me use her machine… isn’t she so sweet? I was thinking about maybe putting a link on here so that my readers can buy some of the stuff if they wanted. What do you think? Would you like that? Remember, I contribute part of the purchase price to the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation.

Ok so, while I was painting my kitchen yesterday, I got to reminiscing about when my DD was little and always wanted to help me in the kitchen when I was making cakes, cookies, etc. It was more like she just wanted to lick the bowls LOL, but to her it was helping! Then of course she’d get batter all over her and we’d have to change clothes. Well that made me look at aprons… and it inspired today’s craft. And the artisan just “happened” to use a dish towel with, of all things… LEMONS! LMAO! Go figure! So if you have little kids, grandkids, etc. who like to help you in the kitchen, try this one on for size… kids size! LOL!

Craft Idea of the Day: Kids Dish Towel Apron

Supplies:

1 dishtowel (mine measured 18" x 28")
one package of double fold bias tape--extra wide
thread to match
ribbon or trim (optional)

Instructions:

Lay out the dishtowel with the shorter edge on top and measure 4 inches in from each top edge, and measure 9 inches down each side edge. Draw a line between these two marks and cut on the line using scissors or a rotary cutter.

This is when you would add any ribbon or trim. In this example, it is added at the top and the bottom of the apron.

Now you need to open up your bias tape and pin it to the edges of the apron.

You will want to pin the bias tape to the apron so that there is a 15-inch neck hole and 22-inches of bias-tape hanging at each edge for ties. Now you can sew the bias tape to the apron.

Now fold your bias-tape over to the back of the apron (the neck-hole and tie bias-tape pieces will be sewn to themselves) and sew.

Finish the edge of the apron with a parallel seam and you are done!

I just thought that was the cutest thing. It would also go great if you bought a young girl her first easy bake over, or something like that. It would be a great gift for all kinds of events even if you don’t have kids of your own, but know someone who does.

Ok, now as you know, after our beloved crafts, its time to eat! WOOHOO! I love this part LOL! Well it’s casserole week peeps! So today I am bringing you another super delish pan of homemade yumminess!

COPYCATS & FARMERS FOODS

Well a crazy wet and rainy morning to you today! How do you like this “lovely” weather? I, quite frankly, am waiting for mother nature to decide what she wants to do LOL. So how are you today? I am surprisingly well really. I think I have most of that toxic yuck out of my body now… I’m really sore and tired, but those are my norms LOL. Got a busy day planned today, as the DD had to be at sectionals at 6am, so the day started early for me! Got to pick up some groceries, get some lunber, pay a couple of bills, etc… lots to do! Good thing I’m early and doing my blog already huh? LOL

I want to thank everyone for the comments and emails yesterday. You all make me smile each day and I just hope you find something useful from my entries… be it a new recipe, a new craft idea, or just a smile or giggle. I believe it’s essential that we laugh at least once per day… its healthy even. To Hazel… OMG I didn’t know you were in Canada! WOW! Ya know I’ve heard it’s lovely and very peaceful over there. Must be a great place to be. Yes we had a wonderful time and I am very excited for our next adventure LOL. A lot of people tell me I look like my father… and many tell me I look just like my mother and even mistake us for sisters LOL. Even the doctors asked if she was my sister when I was giving birth to my daughter!! Yes, my mother was with me when my kids we born (I told you we were close LOL). We don’t have an Aldi’s where I live, but I had read a while back that they are going to bring the first one to Texas soon… but it will still be over 300 miles away from me, so I doubt I’ll see it very often LOL. And to Jean… thanks for your comments too. I hope you get to feeling better soon darlin’… you are an asset to this blog! LOL one of you even suggested that maybe one day, we can have an annual get together… like a convention for a couple of days LOL! That’s an interesting idea… I see us going to the Market and having a grand ol’ time!

Ok, so I know I was gonna try to just relax yesterday… but it didn’t happen LOL! Every time I went to get a drink or throw something away in the kitchen, I would see all the beautiful farmers market finds and I wanted to cook. So I started with slicing up the pineapple. Now here is a tip for you all… Fresh pineapples (I mean right off the bush fresh) are high in acids. When grocers ship them to stores, they are packed in salt to neutralize the fruit’s acids. Many people don’t know that they should NOT eat a pineapple before it has been cured with sugar or salt… and I totally forgot. The ones brought over straight from Mexico are NOT packed and my daughter and I made the mistake of munching on it RIGHT after I sliced it! OMG hello! Her poor lips started to swell and I thought bout the salt. I felt so bad for her cause its so painful LOL. Ok, so I put that aside and decided that I would hollow out the 10-inch zucchinis so I could get them ready for sausage boats.

I also chopped the broccoli for lunch. I had a big sirloin steak I had got at the meat market for cheap, so I sliced that against the grain (so it cooked up nice and tender) and put the meat in some teriyaki marinade from Kroger that had pineapple juice in it. IDEA! Cure the pineapple by cooking it in the sugars and salts from the meat! LOL… Broccoli & Beef with Pineapple over white Rice for lunch with some fried broccoli on the side. Isn’t that just marvelous looking!? I was hoping to have some to freeze, but that didn’t happen LMAO!

Ok, so the freaked over lunch… now its time to prep for dinner. Remember the 4 pound cabbage I got? Peeled the outside 5 leaves and then quartered the head. Boiled all of it till tender. Take a pound of hamburger, some spices, cracker crumbs, and an egg and make some meatloaf rolls. Wrap those up in the cabbage leaves, spray the leaf with butter spray and sprinkle parmesan cheese on top. Bake about 20 minutes until the meat is cooked. The rest of the head is shredded and made into yummy Cheddar Cabbage Casserole! YUMMY!

Dinner will be pan sausage and cheese stuffed zucchinis from the market, mashed potatoes, and cheddar cabbage casserole. I topped the boats with extra shredded cheddar cheese too. Again, all the fresh farm ingredients making such a yummy meal. After such a big lunch, the gang could only take 1 boat and a scoop of sides each LOL! Maybe NOW I can freeze something?? LOL! Looks like a couple of extra meals finally YAY!

As for food for today… well finding mom’s lunch recipe for her inspired me to do an entry about Copycat restaurant recipes. There is a series of books out there called “Top Secret Restaurant Recipes” by Todd Wilber and in them he gives you the “secret recipes” to tons of different things from all over the place. McDonalds, Applebees, Chili’s, Olive Garden, you name it! I figure if I get the books and make my favorite things (and they turn out actually like the real deal LOL) then I’m gonna save myself money by having it on hand at home LOL! I got a favorite thing from tons of different places, so my quest continues (as does my buying of these books LOL) as time goes on! BUT here are some of my restaurant favorites that I figured I would share that are “copycat recipes”.

McDonalds Hot Mustard

2. Turn heat to medium and bring mixture to a boil, stirring often. Sauce should thicken in 2 to 3 minutes after it begins to boil. Remove Sauce from heat and chill in refrigerator in a covered container. Makes 1 cup.

Popeye’s Famous Cajun Gravy

1 Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large saucepan.
2 Saute chicken gizzard in the oil for 4 to 5 minutes until cooked.
3 Remove gizzard from the pan and finely mince.
4 Combine ground beef and ground pork in a small bowl.
5 Smash the meat together with your hands until it's well-mixed.
6 Add bell pepper to the saucepan and saute it for 1 minute.
7 Add the ground beef and ground pork to the pan and cook it until it's brown.
8 Use a potato masher to smash meat into tiny pieces as it browns.
9 Add water and beef broth to the pan.
10 Immediately whisk in cornstarch and flour.
11 Add remaining ingredients and bring the mixture to a boil.
12 Reduce heat and simmer gravy for 30 to 35 minutes or until thick.

This next “copycat” was for an appetizer that we had at Red Lobster on Sat. However, when I made it yesterday afternoon it turned out NOTHING like the one I tasted there. Now, I’m not fond of fried veggies really, but it was tasty… and my gang here was spazing loving the fried broccoli I made. This is MY picture and the supposed copycat recipe (which I followed to the “T” btw).

LOVELY LITTLE LISTS

Well GOOD morning everyone! How are you doing today? I’m well… cold but well. Its not as bitter a cold today as we are on a “warming trend” the weatherman says LOL! I am really scatterbrained today, so the topics are all over the place… lists, crafts, food, gardening, you name it and I’m thinking about it! I hope everyone is ok… I’ve noticed a decline in readers. I hope everyone is still enjoying the information I share. Well for those still out there, here we go…

Now, I hate to admit it, but recent party planning and the lists, etc. that I use has put me into overdrive! LIST OVERDRIVE! I learned a long time ago that I function best with lists. They keep me organized and help me accomplish all kinds of things. I suspect I may be ADHD (as does my son’s doctor), and I treat myself as such (even though I have never had an official diagnosis), so I have learned that this is a tool that helps me in life. Without them I tend to be disorganized, forgetful, and downright LOST! Grocery lists, inventory lists, Monthly menus, To Do lists, Guest lists, Bill paying lists, etc. You name it… so guess what I am going to be doing today? Yep LISTS!!!

Craft Idea of the Day: Homemade Menu Calendars

For starters of my pile of lists, I’m going to make my own menu calendars. I found a great free printable blank calendars on another blog entry… check it out HERE! Then I am going to print them out smaller than a full page and bind the months together with some rubber cement. Then I am going to mount the pile of calendars onto some pretty scrapbook paper (food or kitchen related). After that all dries, I am going to put it onto a piece of cardboard cut the same size as the scrapbook paper and mount a strip of magnet on the back. Once completed, I’m going to write a meal on each day and hang it on the fridge so everyone will know what’s in store for the upcoming month. I hope it will turn out cute… and I have all the supplies to do it, so even if I mess up LOL., I can do it again! You can do this too… and not just for meal menus, but just a calendar in general. You can use a picture of your family, your pet, etc. There are also many computer programs to design and print your own calendars as well. The possibilities are really endless. I choose to hand make my own cause it allows me to be more creative.

Then I got in a really crafty mood yesterday when I went through another box from storage. I had some periwinkle blue ceramic tiles that I found on clearance (like 5 cents each at the Home Depot one time. I bought them cause I needed a cheap purchase for a secret shop… the box had like 24 or something… didn’t count them LMAO!) and I sat there thinking… what can I do with these? Then it hit me! I recently found some scrapbook paper that matches my current living room! I have modge podge, decorative papers, and tile… DECOUPAGE TIME!

I cut the paper to fit the tile and decoupaged it on. On 2 of the tile, I just cut out one of the flowers with some special scissors, glued fleece (you could use felt too) and then I sprayed varish/clear sealant on it. I glued a ribbon around all 4 sides and then a tiny bow where the end of the ribbon was and… Voila a pretty coaster to match my living room!!

Now with the tiles that have a full square covering them, I am gonna checkerboard them with the plain blue tile to make a pretty table top! I am going to cut a piece of plywood to the same size as my table and adhere the tile to it. Once it is completed I will have a lovely tabletop to match my living room (as it is right now!) I think it’s turning out very pretty! I just need to go get more paper LOL. Then I thought I could make others and sell them! Small end tables, full size coffee tables… or BOTH! How cool would that be!? And when I redo the living room in 60’s psychadelic… I could do tie-dye and 60’s symbols like peace signs, hearts, moons, etc! COOL huh? LOL…

Then I found more wooden spoons in storage so I spray painted them bright orange. They are gonna be more garden markers and I think this color will stand out very nicely against all the green I hope to be having! I tried a couple in yellow too, but I’m not diggin’ that color as much. Not bright enough! Maybe multiple coats will look better… if not- it’s off to the store for paint YAY! LOL…

Then my brother was a gem and brought me some wooden palates last night, so I think I’m gonna start building my planters on the back porch today. (Can ya tell I am anxious about my gardening coming up? LOL) I’m not sure if I want to line them with plastic or with like a mesh or a moss or something… will have to look around the Garden Center and see what I like best (and what’s cheap)… right now, it looks like the plastic might win! I have plenty of that everywhere LOL! I’m also going to paint some cat litter buckets white and make some hanging planters… I might even decoupage one with Strawberry paper and make a planter for the cute strawberry plants in my kitchen window… which are already giving me baby berries BTW! Isn’t that the coolest!?

Then I think I am going to start cutting material for my daughter’s room and one of the things I want to make is a scrap wreath. Basically you cut strips of material and you tie it around a wire ring/wreath form. You keep tying and tying until you have a very full wreath! I have to cut the closet curtain too… and get all the measurements for everything in her room. The goal is to have her room redone by the end of the month. That only gives me like 9 days YIKES!! I best get motivated and busy huh!? Maybe since I am still in the crafty mood, it'’ll be the perfect time!

Okie dokie so we gotta eat right? A crafter has to eat to keep up their crafting strength if nothing else LMAO… so what to make. I think some Meatloaf with some Broccoli cheese rice and some garlic focaccia bread slices would be nice… last time I made it, it was a huge hit! But I’ll share a different broccoli casserole side recipe with you today that is also a big hit here in my house.

Ritz Broccoli Casserole
(I found the original recipe on the Kraft website and made some adjustments.)

Ingredients

2 pkg. (16 oz. each) frozen chopped broccoli, thawed, drained
1 lb. VELVEETA Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
72 RITZ Crackers, coarsely crushed (about 3 cups), divided
1 (10oz.) can of cheddar cheese or cream of broccoli soup
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter or margarine, melted

Directions

HEAT oven to 350°F.

MIX broccoli, VELVEETA, soup, and half the cracker crumbs until well blended.

SPOON into 2-qt. baking dish. Mix remaining cracker crumbs and butter; sprinkle over broccoli mixture.

BAKE 45 min. or until heated through.

Ok gang, Alex is still home and he just woke back up, so I need to get his medicine to him and get him fed (hopefully he will eat) so that he can be settled in and I can get some crafts going. I hope ya’ll are safe and warm and well wherever you may be. Until tomorrow… HUGS!

MARRIAGE & COOK-A-THONS

Well an early and cold morning Hi there and hello! Hope this day finds you all toasty warm and safe and happy! It’s an insane 36 degrees here this Saturday, and its marathon cooking day! I’m very excited even though I know by the end of the day I will be very swollen and in a lot of pain… but its worth it LOL! Oh let me tell ya… remember the girl diaper cake just made for the band director and his wife? Well it couldn’t have been made at a better time! LOL glad it wasn’t put off until THIS weekend LOL! She had the baby Friday (yesterday) morning at 6:04am! Congrads to Mr. & Mrs. B!!

Ok, so I was sitting at my desk last night looking through my emails and I thought about the fact that my BFF of over 10 years is getting married in March and I don’t have a great gift to give the happy couple. I was quite ashamed of myself… for a few moments at least LMAO! Then, in kicks my craftiness LOL! I got all kinds of ideas pop into my head. I could make them a scrapbook with photos of the 2 of them since they have been together that I have, or just 1 scrapbook page and frame it.

I could make a dish towel cake. It’s very similar to the diaper cake, except, you guessed (the obvious LOL) it, made with dish towels.

Then you adorn it with kitchen utensils, etc. Not feeling real groovy about this idea yet… but its “under advisement” LOL!

Or I could make them a “Romantic Dinner for Two” in a basket. I know that when I make the Italian dinner basket, it is very popular. And as much as I love my BFF… LOL… even SHE admits that she’s not the best cook in the world… which leads me to another idea for a gift.

Print up all my recipes and make a very nice binder and she can have a cookbook that she knows she’s eaten the stuff and is yummy! Get a real pretty fabric and cover a ring binder… hmmm another good thought I suppose.

I also thought about the wrapping of whatever gift I give them. I think I am gonna either make my own gift bag (from a plain one) or use a large card board box and decorate both sides. On one side it will be made to look like a tuxedo and the other will look like a bride’s dress… I found a tux bag (the picture) but not a homemade bag or even a bride bag, so my crafty mind says why not combine them?? I think it would be cool! I mean after all, it IS supposed to be for the happy COUPLE right?

Then of course they need a card with their gift right? Okie dokie… well I was searching for cute friendship poems and I ran across this one! I’m gonna use it in the homemade card I make them!

The REAL FRIEND !!
A simple friend, when visiting, acts like a guest.
A real friend opens your refrigerator and helps himself.
A simple friend has never seen you cry.
A real friend has shoulders soggy from your tears.
A simple friend doesn't know your parents' first names.
A real friend has their phone numbers in his address book.
A simple friend brings a bottle of wine to your party.
A real friend comes early to help you cook and stays late to help you clean.
A simple friend hates it when you call after he has gone to bed.
A real friend asks you why you took so long to call.
A simple friend seeks to talk with you about your problems.
A real friend seeks to help you with your problems.
A simple friend wonders about your romantic history.
A real friend could blackmail you with it.
A simple friend thinks the friendship is over when you have an argument.
A real friend calls you after you had a fight.
A simple friend expects you to always be there for them.
A real friend expects to always be there for you!
When you get into trouble you can call a simple friend for help. When you get into trouble your real friend is sitting in the cell with you saying, "Man, that was fun!"

I think she’ll get a kick out of that! I’m gonna do some research on more homemade wedding themed gifts and see if I can mesh with anything I am thinking about. Hopefully I can have a rockin’ idea by the end of the coming week… I need time to work ya know LOL!

Ok, well it’s time to restock the freezer with delicious homemade TV dinners and soups. I have been prepping things each day to hopefully reduce the amount of work tomorrow- such as chopping veggies, etc. I cut up 2 ziplocs with stir fry veggies and froze them, as well as dicing and slicing and shredding for this glorious day LOL. Today I will be making things with diced broccoli stalks, celery, onion, carrots, leeks, broccoli crowns, diced asparagus stalks- the asparagus spears will be made into more rollups, steaks, chickens, sausage, etc. I plan on some Chicken Fried Steak TV dinners as well with the cutlets I have in the fridge. I will be making a lot of things I have posted in previous entries as well as some new things. An oldy but goodie around here that everyone goes crazy over is my buttermilk fried chicken. Maybe there will be enough to make a couple of TV dinners out of… but probably not LMAO! So I’m gonna share a couple of surefire recipes with you and then tomorrow, we’ll talk about what was brought to life and what was kindly laid to rest LMAO!

Buttermilk Fried Chicken

Ingredients

1 (4 pound) chicken, cut into pieces
1-2 cup buttermilk
2 cups all-purpose flour for coating
1 teaspoon paprika
2 tablespoons Emeril Essence
1 teaspoon garlic powder
salt and pepper to taste
2 quarts vegetable oil for frying

Directions

1. Take your cut up chicken pieces and skin them if you prefer. Place in a bowl or ziploc bag along with the buttermilk and coat the chicken. Place in the fridge and let sit for at least 2 hours… but overnight is better!

2. Put the flour in a large plastic bag (let the amount of chicken you are cooking dictate the amount of flour you use). Season the flour with paprika, essence, garlic, salt and pepper to taste (paprika helps to brown the chicken).

3. Take the pre-dipped chicken pieces in buttermilk then, a few at a time, put them in the bag with the flour, seal the bag and shake to coat well. Place the coated chicken on a cookie sheet or tray, and cover with a clean dish towel or waxed paper. LET SIT UNTIL THE FLOUR IS OF A PASTE-LIKE CONSISTENCY. THIS IS CRUCIAL!

4. PAN: Fill a large skillet (cast iron is best) about 1/3 to 1/2 full with vegetable oil. Heat until VERY hot. Put in as many chicken pieces as the skillet can hold. Brown the chicken in HOT oil on both sides. When browned, reduce heat and cover skillet; let cook for 30 minutes (the chicken will be cooked through but not crispy). Remove cover, raise heat again and continue to fry until crispy. Chicken can also be cooked in a deep fryer as well.

5. Drain the fried chicken on paper towels. Depending on how much chicken you have, you may have to fry in a few shifts. Keep the finished chicken in a slightly warm oven while preparing the rest.

Cream of Broccoli Soup

Ingredients

1 head fresh broccoli (stems too), chopped
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons minced onion
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
1 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 pinches paprika
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Directions

Place broccoli in a medium saucepan with chicken stock to cover, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until tender, 15 minutes. Remove broccoli and reserve broth.

In the same pan, melt butter over medium heat. Cook onions in butter until tender, 10 to 15 minutes. Stir in flour, milk and cream. Stir broth into soup. Season with Worcestershire, paprika and salt. Stir in cheese and cook 10 minutes more. Puree soup in batches until all is smooth and creamy. Return to pan and warm through.

Ok guys and gals, its time for me to get off my backside and get to work. Maybe if I get the blood flowing and the oven warming, I can knock the chill off the air in here. So my crock pots and I bid you a healthy hearty Saturday! Until tomorrow… HUGS!

MARY MARY QUITE CONTRARY…

Rain, Rain go away… oh… morning everyone. LOL Hope you are staying warm and healthy wherever you may be! And I was so happy to hear from a couple of my readers… I am glad you are still here and I wish you the best! Jean, eat those soups and feel better soon my darling! Susan, I will play with some stuff this weekend and see what I can come up with for that recipe you’re looking for. A couple of the other readers haven’t checked in, so I hope they are ok.

I’ve been working on stock up cooking a little this week… preluding to this weekend LOL. Well last night I worked on a few breakfast things. I made burritos, croissants and omelets. Wrapped and labeled and ready for quick grab-n-go meals. Check these out…

These are the Southwestern omelets I made. The have cooked taco meat, tomatoes, bell peppers, cheese, onions, etc inside. Didn't they turn out pretty?

Remember all those croissants I found on clearance? Well I got more the other day and made more breakfast Crossiant sandwiches with cooked sausage patties, egg, and cheese. Assemble and wrap them up and stick them in the fridge. 45 seconds to 1 minute and you have a nice hot and filling breakfast on the go!

Ground pan sausage browned, eggs, and cheese wrapped up in a burrito size tortilla and wrapped up for hungry teens are easy. Heat it up in the morning for 1 minute 15 seconds and they are good to go!

Well, it’s cold and wet and nothing has changed weather wise here. So I am trying to make the inside bright and sunny and happy! Oh I have to share with you my new babies…

Aren’t they cute?!! OMG these are gonna be the perfect start to my garden! Two healthy strawberry plants to start my season! I have to build new planters but wooden palates are a dime a dozen here. I have tons of seeds I am waiting for to germinate. I’m aiming for a big crop this spring/summer… I have all kinds of peppers, tomatoes, melons, squash, zucchini, and a ton of other stuff… herbs, fruits, veggies, you name it! I might even try a few fruit trees! Not sure yet… either way I am going green and hope for tons of free fruits and veggies! You should try it. Even if all you have is a small concrete patio balcony or something… try a husky cherry tomato or something else that grows well in containers. . A number of edibles including herbs, small-fruited tomatoes, salad greens and peppers are suited to grow in containers. Pole beans, cucumbers and squash can be trained to grow up a trellis, arbor or fence, providing vertical interest and plentiful production. You can join the Home Depot Garden club and you will get coupons in the email and snail mail good on all kinds of things to help your gardening adventure. I also find it very therapeutic. They have those Topsy-Turvey things you can try to grow your tomatoes, etc from hanging planters to help with space issues as well. I have seen the tomato and strawberry hanging planters at Home stores and even Walgreens and CVS! And they have bonus bucks and coupons you can use on your purchases too… just something to think about. Don’t want to spend a bunch on the planters? Use buckets, etc to make your own… save money, recycle, and have fun! You can find lots of instructions online to build your own hanging planters.

Ok, so if you haven’t guessed already, the crafts I am making today are going to be for my upcoming garden. I am making the Spoon Garden markers with some old wooden spoons. I am transforming a couple of cat litter buckets (that have been super scrubbed out) into hanging planters. I’ll be prepping some wooden palates for building my box planters. I will be making lists of things I need to get… compost, etc. Also gotta map out my plant placement, etc. And of course, I am planning to make the yard pretty and nature friendly… I have to attract bees and other pollinators and of course birds, etc. So check out some of these yard/nature crafts I’m working on…

Terra Cotta Garden Birdbath

You can choose what size terra cotta pots and trays you want to use. Glue them together with clear caulking, let dry at least 24 hours. Whitewash with thinned out white acrylic paint. Let dry about an hour, then paint what ever you want on it, or just blend paints, that is also nice. I liked the leaves and frogs on mine. It is really whatever you like. Let it dry 24 hours then spray with sealer. You really should let it dry 24 hours then spray again and let dry another 24 hours. Fill and watch the birds play in it.

Milk Carton Bird Feeder

Here's how to recycle a milk carton or juice carton to make an excellent bird feeder for finches, sparrows, chickadees and other small feathered visitors to backyard bird feeders. This design protects the bird seed from rain and snow, which is very useful in the winter months when many bird feed platforms become snow covered and unusable. Don't forget, however, that feeding the birds is a year-long commitment; during the nesting season in spring and summer, the nutritional needs of many birds increases tremendously as they work to build nests and feed their young.

Supplies:

milk or juice carton
craft knife or scissors
wax pencil or crayon
ruler or straight edge
two small lengths of double-sided tape
two bamboo skewers or straight, small diameter twigs to use as perchs
bird seed
hole punch
twine to make a hanger

Instructions:

1. Use the wax pencil and ruler to draw the shape of the opening on the front of the milk carton, as shown in the diagram at right. The opening looks like the outline of a house with a peaked roof. You should allow about two inches at the bottom of the carton to hold a good amount of seeds.

2. Use the craft knife to cut out the opening. Younger children will need an adult to help with this part.

3. Using the top of the peak as a center point, fold the piece of milk carton that you just removed in half along its length. Make a half inch cut from the point of the peak down the center fold. Fold up a half inch flap on either side of this cut, as shown in the diagram at right.

4. Attach a length of double-sided tape to each flap.

5. Insert this roof piece into the top of the opening and use your fingers to press the flaps against the inside of the milk carton until the double-sided tape holds securely.

6. Poke a bamboo skewer or thin straight twig through the wall of the milk carton, just below the left side of the opening. Repeat on the right side. Poke skewers all the way through and out the back wall of the carton. This keeps the perches straight and secure.

7. Use a hole punch or a skewer to punch two holes through the top line of the carton.

8. Thread twine through the two holes to make a hanger. 9. Fill the bottom of the feeder with nyger seed or a small bird seed mixture. Hang your milk carton bird feeder from a tree branch that you can reach easily when you need to add more bird seed.

Painted Strawberry Rock

Find a larger rock that is either naturally more round, or you can chip it into a rounder shape. Gather your paints and have fun making a yard Strawberry! And did you know that May is National Strawberry month? Check out some interesting info HERE regarding strawberries including some great recipes!

And then of course… let’s talk about BUTTERFLIES! Both my mom and I thought there were worms in our gardens that were there to eat everything! Well she killed them… I just threw them in the field. We later discovered they were butterflies! OMG did we feel horrible! So we started having “sacrificial plants” strictly for the butterflies! It works great! So I wanted to stress the butterfly issue for those who are thinking about starting a garden and I found this article that is great about the importance of butterflies to your garden..

Butterfly Gardening: What to Plant in Your Garden to Attract Butterflies
Copyright © 2002-2008 Jane Lake

One of the joys of having a garden is seeing the butterflies take wing among the flowers. By adding a few new plants to your backyard you may attract up to 50 different types of butterflies, says landscape architect Katherine Dunster, designer of the Gosling Wildlife Gardens at the University of Guelph, Ontario. Butterflies, like the honeybee, are excellent pollinators and will help increase your flower, fruit and vegetable production. The secret to successful butterfly gardens lies in providing a wide variety of flowers and shrubs.

Start by seeding part of your lawn with a wildflower seed mix, available through seed catalogues and garden centers. Wildflowers are a good food source for butterflies and their caterpillars.

Aim for a wide spectrum of flower colors. Some butterflies prefer oranges, reds and yellows, while others like whites, purples and blues.

As a rule, simple flowers are better than fancy double-hybrids, offering an easy-to-reach nectar source.

Plant your annual and perennial beds with butterfly milkweed, arabis, sweet rocket, black-eyed susan, purple coneflower, honesty, hollyhocks, sweet william, white and purple alyssum, cosmos, coreopsis, phlox, daisies, catnip, heliotrope, sea holly, asters, stocks, zinnias, yarrow, globe thistles, lavender, rosemary, thyme, stonecrops, sweet woodruff, candytuft, verbena and gaillardia.

Good choices for shrubs and small trees include the butterfly bush, common lilac, mock orange, beauty bush, blackberry, potentilla, honeysuckle, hawthorn, weigela, sumac, rose of Sharon, spirea, privet and pussy willow.

Try growing some of these plants in masses, rather than as single specimens. Butterflies are attracted to a riot of color and will return to an abundant nectar supply.

Most caterpillars have specialized food requirements such as grasses, common weeds and wildflowers. However, if it appears that caterpillars are destroying a favourite plant, reduce the population by removing them by hand. Spraying is not recommended as it may also harm beneficial insects.

In addition to selective planting, there are a variety of other ways to offer butterflies their food and attract them to your garden.

Mud Puddling

Butterflies, particularly males, enjoy pulling up a stool to the local mud bar - otherwise known as "mud puddling." They are seeking salts and minerals that enhance their libido and encourage breeding. According to the University of Kentucky, Department of Entomology:

"Butterflies also like puddles. Males of several species congregate at small rain pools, forming puddle clubs. Permanent puddles are very easy to make by burying a bucket to the rim, filling it with gravel or sand, and then pouring in liquids such as stale beer, sweet drinks or water. Overripe fruit, allowed to sit for a few days is a very attractive substance (to them!) as well."
From the University of Texas article on Butterfly Gardening:
"A damp sand patch, baited with a small amount of manure, fermenting fruit such as bananas or cantaloupe, or ripe fish will attract butterflies in a puddle assemblage where they will be less wary. These assemblages make observation and photography easy."

The damp edges around garden ponds are perfect areas for butterfly puddling, but you can also make your own butterfly puddle by filling a small bowl with sand and moistening with water. Find a nice spot in your garden and dig the bowl into the ground. Add a small pinch of salt to entice the males; you may find that many males of a single species come to visit with their friends. Decorate the butterfly puddle with river rocks or clam shells to give the butterflies a nice place to bask in the sun.

The measure of your success as a butterfly gardener will be the number and varieties you manage to attract. Experimenting with different color and flowering plant combinations over a few years will establish which plants are best for the species in your area. All that remains then is to purchase a field guide to butterflies, and to sit back and watch your garden take wing.

THE RACE CONTINUES

Hi there boys and girls… how are you doing today? I’m cold… very, very cold! Hopefully this will be the last day of these freezing temps. That's according to the weatherman at least. I hope you all are staying warm. We had to help the landlord fix a busted pipe on the neighbor’s house that was flooding our back yard yesterday. She is out of town on a cruise, so she wasn’t there to drip her pipes. We turned off her water and told the landlord as soon as we saw. Luckily, we didn’t suffer any busted pipes… praying that we can get through the rest of this freeze as lucky!

As for the war on clutter… I got 2 shelves in the hallway packed and listed on craigslist for sale! 135 VHS tapes… I don’t even have a player anymore! So I figure a collector may want them or just someone with a VCR still could use them. So I got those boxed and ready to go… Got some more of my craft magazines boxed up and organized. Got my beverage fountain and some other large cooking/entertaining items put away, but I didn’t get those darn pegboards put up yet! So the goal for today is getting the hang up organizing stuff actually hung up and then put to use today LOL! And conquering more of the boxes of course is also on the list!

I had to run to some stores yesterday… First I went to Target to get my youngest son some Birthday gifts and such for Monday. He officially turns 14 on Monday (man I feel old!) and he is on a Toy Story kick the last few months. With his gift cards and such, he got the big dinosaur and Buzz and some other toys but he didn’t have enough to get the talking Woody doll. So guess what momma got? Yep… the last one! I also got a pack of the small toy figurines, which I will use to decorate his cake I make Monday with as soon as he goes to school. Then I went to Michael’s Arts & Crafts Store yesterday to get another wooden crate and found a bunch of things on sale for 3 for $1.00. I picked up Christmas envelopes, journals and notebooks, and a bunch of other things that I can use to put together as gifts or use myself. And finally, I went to Wal-Mart to get some paint (for the crate) and some other things. I wanted to make it to Hobby Lobby because they have some fleece materials I would like to get and their remaining Christmas stuff is 90% off! But I had to get home before my nephew got here. Maybe Tuesday or something. Monday I plan on decorating the house and baking for when Alex gets home.

Alright peeps, I had a request to see all these blankets I keep saying we are making, so I snapped some pics of them finished. My DS18's friend's sister wasn't there to give her gift to, so lucky for me I was able to get a photo of the baby one he made... so here you go... we have made all these in the last couple of weeks!

The Woodland Blue Camo Blanket

The Snowman Blanket

The Music Notes and scales Blanket

The Breast Cancer Blanket

The baby Blanket

Ok so I was sitting around thinking what kind of baby items one could make that are handy, cute, and somewhat easy… and then it came to me. BURP RAGS! Save your baby’s face and your clothes LOL! They are super easy to make too! Washable and customize them if you have a specific theme your nursery is in. Look at some I made with a Winnie the Pooh theme:

Craft Idea of the day: Baby Burp Rags

Supplies Needed:
1 yard of cotton or flannel fabric
1 yard of thin craft cotton batting
thread

Directions

1. Cut 2 pieces of the fabric in a peanut shape to desired size. The peanut should fit on your shoulder and drape over both sides of your body. Cut 1 piece of cotton craft batting the same size and shape of the peanut. (Click here for the PDF pattern I use)

2. Place the fabric right sides together and then the batting against one of the wrong sides of fabric. Sew the pieces together, leaving a 1 inch opening at the end of one of the peanut sides/ends. Turn the rag right side out and press out all the edges. Sew the opening closed.

That’s it! You have a great baby burp rag. Make 4 or 5 and bundle them together with a pretty ribbon for a cute gift. Make a bunch of them for your own bundle of joy. Trust me, they come in handy! Hope its something you can’t wait to do too! Now… time to eat! What’s on the menu. Well, seeing as tomorrow is Alex’s choice, I get to do mine today LOL! And I have a hankerin’ for chicken! Now Melissa needs some recipes for 2 or small meals. Well here ya go darlin’! You can take out the mushrooms or onions if you don’t like them or leave them in. And for everyone else, you can easily double or triple this recipe to feed more people. But when you increase the recipe, only increase the broth by 1/2. Don’t want it too “liquidy”.

Broccoli Chicken Fettuccine for Two

Ingredients

4 ounces uncooked fettuccine
1/2 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 small onion, halved and sliced
2 tablespoons butter
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed cream of chicken soup, undiluted
1 cup chicken broth
1-1/2 cups frozen broccoli florets, thawed
1 can (4 ounces) mushroom stems and pieces, drained
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Directions

Cook fettuccine according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, saute chicken and onion in butter until no longer pink. Add garlic; cook 1 minute longer. Stir in the soup, broth, broccoli, mushrooms, onion powder and pepper. Bring to a boil.

Drain fettuccine; add to chicken mixture. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 5 minutes or until heated through. Sprinkle with cheese. Yield: 2 servings.

I make this in very large quantities and I always hope for leftovers so that I can make some freezer meals but alas, I’m not so lucky! Maybe one day I can get everyone gone somewhere so that I can cook all day and then freeze everything! That way if they aren’t here, they can’t eat it all at once LMAO! As for me… well I think I’m gonna sign out for today and try to get some cleaning done. I’ll see you back here tomorrow… HUGS!
