THE SEXY SIXTIES

Well an early morning howdy to you all! How are you doing this horribly humid day? I had another rough night, courtesy of the cats, and an early morning phone call from the landlord. Guess I really scared him LOL cause I had to meet and greet the county road department who was delivering a tractor load of dirt and crushed concrete. YAY! No more swimming pool in the front of my yard!

Ahhh... The 1960s, or The Sexy Sixties, in its most obvious sense refers to the decade between 1960 and 1969, but the expression has taken on a wider meaning over the past twenty years. The Sixties has come to refer to the complex of inter-related cultural and political events which occurred in approximately that period, in western countries, particularly Britain, France, the United States and West Germany. Social upheaval was not limited to just these nations, reaching large scale in nations such as Japan and Mexico as well. The term is used both nostalgically by those who participated in those events, and pejoratively by those who regard the time as a period whose harmful effects are still being felt today. The 60's brought us baby boomers, Woodstock, and tons of other historical events like:

The Berlin Wall was built in 1961.

Star Trek debuts in 1966.

Woodstock took place in 1969.

Many famous people were assasinated including: President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and his brother Robert in 1968, Malcolm X in 1965, and Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968.

Many radical and/or influential movements took place (some with results as above) such as Feminism, War Protests, first widespread availability of birth control, Civil Rights Movement/end of segregation.

The U.S. put the first man on Earth's Moon.

As you can see, the sixties had a BIG influence on society, the people, the food, just everything! Crafts were just as popular back then as they are now... maybe even moreso. That's it! Maybe I was born in the wrong era LMAO! Kidding mom! Anyway, some craft techniques that were popular back then were macrame, crochet, hemp jewelry making, tye dye, and then of course sewing, quilting, etc. One thing that I think is cool everytime I see one, is those cool bandana halter tops! Now granted, I need to lose about another me to look good in one... or have a tremendously LARGE bandana LOL! But since I thought it was so cool, I wanted to show you how to make one!

Craft Idea of the Day: Bandana Halter Top

Materials:

20" Bandana
Large Safety Pin
Two Shoe Laces
Sewing Machine
Iron

Instructions:

Fold bandana in half to make a triangle. Press. Fold the top point down 4". Press. Stitch 5/8" from both of the folds to create a casing for the shoe laces. Make sure to back stitch at the beginning and the end of stitching to secure the seam. Poke a safety pin into the end of a shoe lace and guide the shoe lace through the casing by pushing the safety pin through it. Tie the top of the triangle around your neck and the bottom around your back.

Home cooking was the big thing during this era and chicken was an inexpensive way to feed the family with numerous different flavor profiles. Food got influenced from all over the world, so today I bring you a recipe that began as an island delight! Eat & Enjoy!

Kona Chicken

Ingredients

2 (2 pound) broiler chickens, quartered
1/2 cup chopped green onion
1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce
1/4 cup dry white wine
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup honey
ground black pepper to taste

Directions

Place chicken quarters into a slow cooker. Stir together the green onion, soy sauce, white wine, water, honey and pepper in a cup or small bowl. Pour over the chicken. Cover, and cook on low for about 5 hours.

Well that's it everyone! Time for me to get off here and get this day started. I hope you have had a groovy morning and will join me again tomorrow for more fun fact and funky foods! Peace, Love & lots of HUGS!

  1. Yum! That Kona Chicken looks delicious. I wouldn't mind having some of that for lunch right about now, with maybe some of those instant mashed potatoes and Green Giant veggies you mentioned before. LOL Lots of foods were "born" in the sixties. Before that women slaved over hot stoves for hours making meals. Thank goodness for the invention of the frozen food section, microwave, and air conditioning. LMAO
OMG!!! Halter tops were my favorite back then. I had several; I think one or two even might have been those bandana tops like you showed today. Oh the memories.....running (and bouncing) free through the fields without a care in the world and all the guys looking at me in my halter top, short shorts, and flipflips with my hair blowing in the breeze.....wait a minute! They were concentrating on the halter tops, weren't they? OMG!!! LMAO Guess it really was the Sexy Sixties!
Hope the day ahead brings you joy and peace MAN! Have a GROOVY day! Til next time.....
