WHOLE LOTTA UPDATES

Well a bright and early good morning to you boys and girls. How are you doing today? I am busy… busy busy busy! Family business calls for the next couple of days for me to be out of the house… so the Fabric challenge is on hold until Monday. I am still piddling at night, but nothing significant.

OMGoodness… I so have to show you what I found when I went to water my garden…. BABIES! Baby everything! I was SOOOOO excited! I started looking because I happened to notice my pea plants were rather tangled and I need to tie them up on the next level. Then I noticed I had a baby Pea pod!! Oh I squealed LOL and the neighbors all around were looking but I didn’t care!

Then I noticed my scallop squash have blooms!!!! YAY! I see some pretty squash coming to dinner soon! LOL YAY! Aren’t they just the cutest thing? I noticed it looks like my yellow squash will be blooming soon too!

Yet another baby I found? Baby Jalapeno Peppers!! YAY! I love jalapenos and I use them a lot in my cooking… we like it spicy here LOL! Sadly my cayenne and habanero plants aren't looking as good.

Look at the size of my romas! They are getting so HUGE and I pray they don’t bust the stems LOL! And my cherry tomatoes you ask? Well let’s just say there are so many I couldn’t get them all in one shot LOL! Covered top to bottom… when they aren’t so green, I will take more pics so you can make them out!

Now remember that tray of new seeds I started just this past Monday? It’s exploded too! (You might have to enlarge these next couple of pictures) Can you see them? Little CABBAGE sprouts! Oh I was just so excited when I saw these!

Then you can see the Purple Vienna Kohlrabi sprouts in this picture. Every square I started has at least 1 or 2 sprouts! I have never actually had purple kohlrabi, so this will be an interesting experience! From the research I have done, it is supposed to be nicknamed a “German Turnip” and its origin in nature is the same as that of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collard greens, and brussels sprouts: They are all bred from, and are the same species as, the wild cabbage plant (Brassica oleracea). The taste and texture of kohlrabi are supposedly similar to those of a broccoli stem or cabbage heart, but milder and sweeter, with a higher ratio of flesh to skin. The young stem in particular can be as crisp and juicy as an apple, although much less sweet. The kohlrabi can be eaten raw or cooked. So, we shall see if this plant yields a pretty vegetable and if it is delectable as well.

Ok… do you see them? I mean REALLY see them? Its my “Magic Seed Corn” LOL!!! I have sprouts YAY!!!! I am bound and determined to grow corn! All I ask for is 1 ear and I can die a happy woman! LOL. I want to be able to tell my grandchildren… MANY YEARS down the road LOL… that there was this one time that I grew my own corn! LMAO… I know you are probably thinking I am crazy but its ok.

And do you remember those roses I got on clearance? Check them out now! YAY! Beautiful and boy are they sweet smelling! I love it. Why does a rose always smell sweeter when you grow it yourself? LOL. Anyway, I clipped one of the blooms yesterday morning and took it to my mom… so there was actually one more than what you see LOL! Both rose plants have 3 or 4 blooms each! Beautiful aren’t they?

And since we are talking about roses… remember the mini roses I got? Well they have exploded too! I went from just a few blooms to being COVERED in blooms! And oh they smell so sweet too! I wish I could cover my house and yard in roses!

There are tons more plant “ongoings” than I should post pictures here. Like I said, the cherry tomatoes are running rampant, the broccoli, sweet banana, and bell peppers all are showing flowers which will soon be fresh produce, and the Swiss chard has a sprout too! The rosemary and Parsley herb plants are bushing SO nicely. It’s just so nice to be able to show my kids where their food comes from and also to HAVE fresh foods to enjoy! I think that everyone who has kids should grow at least one edible thing to show teach their children where their food comes from and how it takes hard work, but it IS worth it. I know the DS18 is tripping out about it all! Each time I look out at my little garden of Eden, I feel such a sense of pride and accomplishment! It’s a very soulful thing to me and I hope the kids, both mine and the “adopted ones”, all get that same understanding and feeling too. Who knows, maybe one of them might become a future food supplier or something.

And speaking of Rosemary, I think my DS18 figured out why I love the smell so much. See many people do not like the smell. I on the other hand love to rub my hands, and arms, etc. in the plant just to smell it. Well… last night the DS18 tells me that he thinks it smells like a Christmas tree. OMG I think he’s on to something! And I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Pine smell of Christmas trees! SOOO LOL, I did a “smell comparison” with everyone in the house. I rubbed my right arm (I had a jacket/sweatshirt on) in the rosemary plant and then sprayed my left arm with the pine room spray I have left from Christmas. Almost identical!!!!! I never put the 2 together… even AFTER the fact my mother once gave me a Rosemary Christmas tree all decorated for Christmas one year! Can we say DUH! LOL! Shoot, I love Pine/evergreen smell so much I buy tons of candles and febreze each holiday season that smell like pine… enough to last me the whole YEAR until next season! LOL! And my rosemary plant is so stout… I left it out and the snow and freezes didn’t even hurt it this past winter! Cool huh? I hate to admit it, but the boy actually had a “smart” moment! LMAO! J/k!

Ok, food… let’s talk about last night’s Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. OMG it was very moving. To correct a previous error, the larger young lady’s name is Brittany, not Bridget. Well this week Oliver made a bet with the skeptic DJ that he could teach 1000 people in the town to cook healthier. The DJ doubted him. Oliver took the DJ to the Funeral Home where the directors showed them the double wide coffin and told them some horrific information. Then Jamie took the DJ to his kitchen classroom to meet some of the people he has been working with. Brittany was there and told her story to the DJ, who was heartbroken to hear it. Long story short, the DJ came around to Jamie’s ideas and helped get the 1000 people. They even got the Governor involved. It was an awesome show, especially the food dance they did at Marshall College. He has a petition on his website to sign to help support him and the Food Revolution. He will be taking this petition to the White House to present to the president and first lady. I will be adding this link on my sidebar, or you can click HERE to sign the petition!

OK, since I will be out of the house pretty much all of the weekend, I will be setting up the trusty crockpots and letting them do the work for me so that there is a nice hot homecooked meal when I get home. However, my absence got me to thinking how a lot of my readers need something simple and delicious but quick. That inspired today’s recipe… check it out.

Pasta Pomodoro

Ingredients

12 ounce package angel hair pasta
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups roma (plum) tomatoes, diced
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

crushed red pepper to taste
freshly ground black pepper to taste
2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Directions

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 8 minutes or until al dente; drain.

Pour olive oil in a large deep skillet over high-heat. Saute onions and garlic until lightly browned. Reduce heat to medium-high and add tomatoes, vinegar and chicken broth; simmer for about 8 minutes.

Stir in red pepper, black pepper, basil and cooked pasta, tossing thoroughly with sauce. Simmer for about 5 more minutes and serve topped with grated cheese.

OK gang, let me get moving this morning and take care of my biz… I hope you have a pleasant day in wherever life takes you! HUGS!

JANUARY WRAP UP

Good morning my darlings. I hope you are feeling good and staying warm and dry this crazy morning! It’s a whopping 36 degrees here. Well this is it… the last day of the month. Man can you believe it went so soon! I can’t. Its crazy really… sitting back I can’t even think of where half of my 2009 went! Guess what… today is the final day before we find out who the winner of the crock pot is… are you excited?? I am! Its been fun reading all the comments and ideas. I thank you for them and don’t stop just because the contest is coming to a close… keep them coming. I’m also planning another crazy fun contest game soon, so be watching for that!

Well the DH was a very sweet man yesterday. He had to run a couple of errands and he knew I wasn’t feeling well. So he stopped by my favorite restaurant and got my favorite meal (Chinese) and then he got me a dozen red roses. Aren’t they pretty?? Normally that’s a “Sorry I screwed up” move he makes so it was a pleasant surprise LOL!

OK so I did absolutely nothing yesterday… I was quite ashamed. I know I was supposed to clean and do some crafting, but alas… the pain took over and I stayed down all day. SO the DD and I watched movies and ate popcorn LOL! We watched the new MJ “This is It” movie and a few other oldies but goodies. I’m gonna try to do better today. She wants to go to Party City to check out a few things, and I have to clean and maybe get some crafts done! And I’ll warn you now so you don’t worry… more than likely tomorrow I will be blogging in the mid morning to afternoon sometime. I have a couple of things to do first thing in the morning. But don’t worry, I will be here!

OK crafts… hmmm crafts… Honestly I am not feeling very crafty right now. But I will share with you this one project I found that I am doing for my DD’s room. It’s the recycled message center and I found it originally on Thrifty fun. Granted, I am doing hers a little different… and yes I’ll share pics when I’m done and its all together, but the concept is the same!

Craft Idea of the Day: Recycled Message Center

Supplies:

Recycled cork board
Recycled shelf
Spray paint
Fabric
Decorative pins
Butter knife

Instructions:

Spray paint the entire cork board and shelf the same color (you might want to remove any hooks first). Let dry.

To add visual interest, add some fabric along the bottom half of the message board. To do this, simply use a butter knife and slowly work the fabric into the frame of the cork board. Fold over the top part of the fabric as you slide in the sides. Use decorative pins to hold the fabric in place along the cork.

Attach the cork board and shelf to the wall right next to each other so it looks like one big piece.

Presto! Add a calendar or other important papers. If your shelf has hooks, it's a perfect place to hang keys or other essentials.

Okie dokie… what’s for dinner? Well I saw this on allrecipes and I thought it was very pretty and I wanted to try it. The first time I made it, I was like OMG this is scrum-diddly-umptious!!! So I think I’m making that tonight… check it out!

Beef Tenderloin With Roasted Shallots

Ingredients

3/4 pound shallots, halved lengthwise and peeled
1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
3 cups beef broth
3/4 cup port wine
1 1/2 teaspoons tomato paste
2 pounds beef tenderloin roast, trimmed
1 teaspoon dried thyme
3 slices bacon, diced
3 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
4 sprigs watercress, for garnish

Directions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). In 9 inch pie pan, toss shallots with oil to coat. Season with salt and pepper. Roast until shallots are deep brown and very tender, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes.

In a large saucepan, combine beef broth and port. Bring to a boil. Cook over high heat until the volume is reduced by half, about 30 minutes. Whisk in tomato paste. Set aside.

Pat beef dry; sprinkle with thyme, salt and pepper. In a large roasting pan, set over medium heat on the stove top, saute bacon until golden. Using a slotted spoon, transfer bacon to paper towels. Add beef to pan; brown on all sides over medium high heat, about 7 minutes.

Transfer pan to oven. Roast beef until meat thermometer inserted into center registers 125 degrees F (50 degrees C) for medium rare, about 25 minutes. Transfer beef to platter. Tent loosely with foil.

Spoon fat off top of pan drippings in roasting pan. Place pan over high heat on stove top. Add broth mixture, and bring to boil; stir to scrape up any browned bits. Transfer to a medium saucepan, and bring to simmer. Mix 1 1/2 tablespoon butter and flour in small bowl to form smooth paste; whisk into broth mixture, and simmer until sauce thickens. Whisk in remaining butter. Stir in roasted shallots and reserved bacon. Season with salt and pepper.

Cut beef into 1/2 inch thick slices. Spoon some sauce over, and garnish with watercress.

Well gang, that’s all for me. I think I am gonna go bake some homemade cinnamon rolls to wake the house up and drink a monster to try to get moving. Then I have to run DD and a couple of the other kids in band with me to Party City, I need to clean, and get some crafting done. At some point, I also have to make out a shopping list so while the kids are at school, I can get that done too… being out of a few vital things tends to stimulate you to do that LOL! So as you can see, I have a lot to get done and never enough time, so I love you all and I will see you tomorrow! HUGS!

SILENCE IS GOLDEN!! AND EERIE LOL!

Morning there youngsters! How you doing today? I am absolutely WONDERFUL! LOL… my kids are all quietly tucked away in their classrooms and I am all alone! Well, the hubs is in the back snoring his head off but over the years I have learned to tune him out LOL! I looked over the weather this morning and got a big shock… Its gonna get below freezing by the end of the week (YUK!). Man oh man is this gonna be an interesting time. Gonna have to get gloves and coats and hats and tons of blankets to keep everyone warm! Don’t get me wrong, I like it cold but this is a little much! Anyway, so here I sit eating my breakfast in the silence (and man is it wonderful!) and I want to give a big public CONGRATULATIONS to Susan and any of my other readers expecting a new addition in the New Year!

Oh, I got more “casual” pictures for you… hubs is getting a kick out of this. I always fight to have pics taken, but someone wanted “action” shots LOL of me in the kitchen. So here you have me fixing lunch and prepping some of the dinner pots yesterday. Be nice as I was in pain and cold and tired LOL!

Me grilling the shrimp skewers.

Me stirring the crock pots.

New York strip steak and Shrimp Skewers for lunch YUMMY!! Ain't it pretty?? LOL

Ok I wanted to share a recipe I found with you from a book from (what I call) my PIL collection… Publications International Ltd. Series of books. This one I was browsing through is called the Campbell’s Slow Cooker Recipes. Keep in mind I have never tried this, but the picture was so pretty and it looked absolutely delish! So if you try this one out before I do, let me know how it worked out for you!

Directions:

1. Stir the chicken, sausage, rice, onion, broth, and soup into a 6qt. Slow cooker.

2. Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours or HIGH for 4 to 5 hours or until the chicken is cooked through.

3. Stir in the peas and olives into the Slow Cooker. Cover and cook until the mixture is hot. Sprinkle with parsley.

As for tonight’s dinner in my house… I think that its gonna be clean out the fridge night cause everyone will be here and/or coming over and there is a ton of stuff in there (since I cook practically 24-7) that needs to go. Waste not want not! Not gonna put out too much over-effort cause I woke up not feeling good at all and it seems to be getting worse as the minutes go by. Gonna try to concentrate on a lot of sit down things today, and maybe get a bit of cleaning done! But mainly, today is about enjoying the peace & quiet! And let me tell ya, it’s only been about an hour, but like McDonalds… Ba da ba ba ba… I’M LOVIN’ IT! LMAO! So I’m outta here kids. Be watching for the days I say “its “COMMENT” day (NOT NOW… I’ll tell ya in the first paragraph of that day’s post LMAO I’ll dream up some more fancy fun things to share tomorrow… HUGS!
